FAQs: How Often Do I Need to Come?

Model of a spine and charts on a tableOften the elephant in the room when people come to see me for the first time this is by far one of the most common questions on patient’s minds when starting Chiropractic care. We have all heard the tale, you know the one it goes something like this, once you start seeing a Chiropractor you will have to keep seeing them for the rest of your life. Almost as if you embrace this incredible form of healing you will be sucked into an addicted trance and lose all rational decision-making ability.

I’d like to assure you that if you have found the right Chiropractic practice (for you) this will not happen. When it comes to determining a patient’s frequency of care there are three important variables that must be taken into consideration. They are:

What are Your Goals or Expectations for Care?

This is such an important question and one that many are not prepared for. Often, we don’t take the time to think about what our goals are for our health. For many it’s hard to look past the current pain and the desire to get rid of it. As such this is a crucial place to start. Chiropractic adjustments are an excellent tool for helping manage and eliminate pain. The number of visits required to achieve symptomatic relief differs from the number of visits required to fix long term problems.

Regardless of whether you are looking for the quick fix or a deeper healing experience I can say that the number of visits that people want is often different then what they need and this is because we live in a culture that loves the idea of the quick fix. My experience has shown repeatedly that there really are no quick fixes when it comes to healing. However, it is important to get to the bottom of what you are hoping to achieve with your Chiropractic care before we can begin to understand what your journey will entail.

How Deeply Ingrained Are Your Patterns?

Another way of saying this is how long has your problem been going on. While your symptoms may have appeared relatively recently for most people symptoms appear after years and years of the body trying to adapt to the various stressors it is exposed to. Whether those stressors are emotional, chemical or physical tension patterns in the body often start in childhood (and infancy with birth trauma) and are built upon year after year. Depending on what your stressors are if a problem has taken a long time to develop it makes sense that it will take a longer time to heal.

Are you Committed to Making Lifestyle Changes?

Fresh produce in a basketThe final piece to the puzzle of how often you need to be adjusted is how willing you are to make changes in your lifestyle. A huge part of my practice involves discussing lifestyle with my clients. The reason for this is that tension patterns in the body are the effects or manifestation of lifestyle stress. Chiropractic adjustments help the body adapt to stress and function better however, if we never address the stresses that are creating the issues in the body in the first place then we can get stuck in a rut of one step forward and two steps back. When we take the time to use our pain (or other health challenge) as an opportunity to look at our lives and discover where we need to change then we truly have a chance to heal. Those willing to improve their lifestyle habits often respond quicker to Chiropractic adjustments and thus need less adjustments to heal.

For myself and my family health is our number one value and thus we choose to get adjusted weekly and we will do that for the rest of our lives. This decision is based on our goals to feel vital and function at our best and our knowledge that a highly adaptable nervous system is crucial to maintaining health. This frequency might not resonate with you whom may have different values or goals. That is ok. In my practice I strive to meet people where they are at and to create individualized care plans that take your goals, your desire to change (or not change) and your patterns into perspective so that you can feel good about all of the decisions you make on your path to healing.
